1500HP of Boat Engines Have Arrived!

Jun 05, 2021
Hello what's going on? Welcome everyone to another episode of bs for build. Today we are going to answer that question everyone has been asking: what is happening with the ship? Well, we

have

a big update for you. Our Texas Speed LSx 454

engines

, we

have

two. oh, they're so cool, they're right behind me. I can't wait to show them to you. I'm very excited about this, they've

arrived

and we'll show you all about them and talk about them, but first we have a lot. catch up if you remember when we started jump with oscar actually stayed working on things on the

boat

, just kyle and i started doing the initial work on jump with and oscar in that time got a lot of stuff built up to the point where we were okay, now we need our real

engines

to move forward, uh, so let me go back to that time and I'll give you a little refresher and catch you up on the work that Oscar did, so let's go.
1500hp of boat engines have arrived
Catch you up a bit in September 2020, a really excited Chris was ready to take the yacht out to the ocean. The yacht is ready. We are late. Let's try. Let's see how he goes. we left here and started down Willamette so we got 110 miles to the ocean we came back about 10 miles and that's it the engine is dead and as you can see it didn't end well so I took the yacht to dock dry and we started removing all the furniture to get access to the engines and then we started to remove the damaged engine from the yacht, once we got it to the workshop we started the disassembly process and finally discovered the Bad news, we had a damaged piston, we had a damaged cylinder wall and we really, unfortunately, had a lot of signs within our oil that we had damaged bearings in our crank, so at that time we made a very controversial decision to replace the engines with gasoline.

More Interesting Facts About,

1500hp of boat engines have arrived...

One time, while we were waiting at the engines, we went to restore the exterior of the

boat

, giving it a new paint job to make it look much better and more protected from the elements, sending a message to mom, and even protecting the exterior from Meanwhile, our sacrificial anodes, in the shop we ordered a bunch of new boat parts to try to solve the puzzle of using an ls engine mated to a marine transmission that will work for our application with marine exhaust and all the bells and whistles. with a very custom accessory system and exhaust system that we built and that brings us to the point where Oscar started working on building the engine frames.

We're back in the shop and we have the engine floating here and on to the next. The step is that now that we have all the measurements, Oscar is going to go ahead and basically recreate the mounting points that are on the boat, he is going to build it into a bracket, so what we are going to see are the four mounting bolts what we have. Everything we had is going to be sitting here with the engine floating underneath, that way we can build the brackets for the engine to mount on the boat. Oscar finished building this really awesome bracket, so as I mentioned, you can see the mounting bolts. at the right angle it has an offset of about 10 degrees they are in the four corners exactly where they are the height difference is exactly the same and then it even came back here and emulated the shaft so this is an emulation of the propeller shaft and then we have our flange here and that is actually bolted to our transmission so this is the complete game plan as we get on the boat these things take a little bit of adjustment so we can make minor adjustments to make sure we achieve that angle perfectly.

We are now in the engine mount phase of building, so this is the boat that you know emulates exactly what the boat offers us. Now we need to build an engine mount. The game plan is to build it, obviously we're going to tie it to the stock. engine support points here and we're going to cross here to support it. We're going to do something separate for the transmission support. Once we are inside the boat, it will be another pocket style, just like the boat. We build these, we're going to build that and hold it separately, so first Oscar is going to build some cups that go over this and we'll have a cup in each of these corners and then we can bend a tube to build the piece. that's going to be attached to the engine, oh oh, and that's how we got to where we are today.
There is a little dust, but that will be polished out. We stole the intake manifold and put it in. jumper with, but let me show you around so you've seen the template frame construction, the engine mount, but then Oscar came in and built our reservoir, so this is the heat exchanger that runs ocean water through him, but then also. it runs antifreeze running through the engine and exhaust manifolds to cool them down again, so let me be very clear when I say this, there is no ocean water going through the engine, it is antifreeze, it is marine grade antifreeze so it does not poison to any animal. but it's antifreeze so you've got it as a huge heat exchanger designed for a 17 liter diesel so it's going to be able to do the job we just have to make sure it doesn't do the job too well and then we have this is our cooler transmission, same kind of deal, the transmission fluid runs from our transmission here to that guy and the raw water goes through here, so where we are now and why we stop building on this stuff is because we have to take this whole unit , as it is here, somehow, put it on our trailer, take it out to the boat and if we lift just this frame here, it should install on our boat and what we need to do is check our clearances and make sure that we're okay with the crankcase of oil here we need to check we need to check to make sure the transmission clears and then as far as height we need to make sure our heat exchanger clears as well and once we know that Everything becomes clear literally everything What we need to do is some water and cooling system piping and this is ready to go into the boat, but we need to put a Texas Speed engine in here instead of this pointless junkyard placeholder, so without further ado. preamble, let me show you the Texas Speed engines.
These are Texas Speed Lsx 454 duals. They were designed from the ground up for our boat to use on our boat, from the cam specs to the block specs and how we built them to come up with a 454 that has 454 cubic inches, which is the same as the old big blocks from Chevy, but we have it on an lsx block, which is pretty amazing. Both engines are built with the highest quality components in the world, built by incredible engine builders who are the speed and Texas man. these are going to break, I was looking at them today and I think they are the best thing I could do, just write a check and deliver it to my house and it seems unreal, it doesn't look like they are mine, but they are and we are going to use them, like this which i first want to jump to the size of these things, these are huge on a scale just huge for ls, so your standard ls type like 5.3 is 327 cubic inches. block, it's actually a 323, but GM calls it a 327, it doesn't really matter, these are 454.
The bigger the engine, naturally, the more torque it wants to make and that's why we went with such a big engine I guess. If you're watching the series, you know a thing or two about boats, but if not, boats want a lot of torque, so basically we wanted to build the engines with the most torque possible and they definitely delivered on what each of these engines offers. 640 lb-ft of naturally aspirated torque without supercharger or turbocharger. We're basically starting this build saying we won't use them if we need them later, if we need more power, these engines absolutely can do it now, these lsx.
The blocks are very special, they are a high platform, they are actually taller this way so we could get a longer hit, so these are board and hits and that's how you get to that 454. The block lsx is basically a special order from GM and it's performance. The engine block is actually made of steel instead of aluminum, as seen in a Corvette engine, so it may be a little stronger. It has the ability to have more bolts and things that hold the crank. there, so you don't have it, you know it's going to be able to take a lot more abuse, but when I say if we need more power, we can do it.
I am in no way exaggerating these things with power supplements. an lsx block can reach 2000 horsepower so in theory we could probably reach 2000 I mean because this is a bottom end built again with the best quality parts in the world so if we wanted both to reach the 2000 horsepower, I bet it's possible. it's just not exactly what we wanted for the boat application, race car, yeah boat, we're just trying to get a lot, a lot, a lot of reliability, so we're taking a block that can handle 2000 and we're delivering a lot less to purpose for For the sake of reliability, as far as horsepower, these babies come with 750 horsepower, a piece that again doesn't have any power additions or anything like that, so 1500 horsepower and what?
Is it the math of torque? I think 1280 lb-ft of torque from this package is here. It's pretty incredible, so there are a lot of people who commented that we stayed with the diesels because now you needed the torque, obviously these engines have a lot of torque, but the people who really know about engines and their construction and things like that know that the torque It is a calculation. of horsepower and rpm, you can swap rpm zones to get more torque, that's why you downshift your car when driving uphill, so with these we have overall more horsepower and more torque than the bow engines we took off the boat. but what we do need to do is run them at a little higher rpm than boat engines used to, which is not a problem, the engine will be happier with the transmission we bought.
By doing that, we also change our gear in our transmission to calculate everything in general. If my projections are correct, this will make the ship go overall 10 miles per hour faster than it could go in the beginning, it said in the magazine it was supposed to go. going to 40, actually it would have only gotten to 30. We would have been on the rev limiter for the engines and now we should be able to get back to that 40 if we want, which is really fast for a giant, yeah, Texas speed. Obviously, they built us a beastly set of engines for our boat and we're so grateful that they partnered with us and helped us with this project, so there's a link in the description.
I know I already know a lot in the comments. of people are going to say oh, this took forever, um, when it really came down to some very, very small things, but again we had a very unique lockdown. I don't want to name any particular company because I know everyone is doing it. the best they could, but I will tell you that it was not the speed of Texas that made this take so long, it was the components that we decided to use and it has to do with the fact that being a high platform we needed to order some special parts and such.
The parts were reordered because when the Covid stimulus hit everyone started ordering engine parts and the whole industry is backed up and I know this from everyone I talked to so it definitely wasn't Texas Speed's fault but You know what I know. I don't think the other guys whose fault it was really deserve shame either. I mean, I'm happy for these guys. These are American companies that are doing well and business is doing well so I'm happy for them so I'm not even going to single them out but you know we had to wait our turn and eventually we got the components and you know we were building the jumper while we were waiting, it wasn't the end of the world, it's just there and I like it.
In a month, month and a half, it's key to start the boat season in Oregon anyway, honestly, this time of year last time I think I used my boat once, so we're not missing much, but of course anyway the reason I was saying that is huge thanks to texas speed and the link will be in the description if you want to see them if you need an ls build for whatever you're building you'll want to access them so yeah Guys, you watched the last episode. They know we went to the shipyard to get our trailer back and get rid of our well.
We haven't gotten rid of our old diesel engine yet. Oh my god, I'll say this more. Once we have one of the good diesel engines still on the boat, we will get it out here very, very soon and if anyone wants it, they can have it for free or we will get money if we recycle it. Let's get money for steel burgers. Honestly, people don't even want them for free, it's crazy, so we're going to get rid of the ones I checked on the boat, although inside and out, and everything looks good, soI am very happy that it is nice and safe and that everything is going well.
It's taking on water, so now it's time we have to start over with the boat project, so we're going to skip between boat episodes and jumper scams. episodes, I hope everyone's happy with it, but I mean, hey, it's what we have to do, we're, we're, we can't let the boat sit still any longer and I'm really excited to put it in the water, so in the next. episode we will go back to the boat and test the engines and do all kinds of fun things. I'll see you, so thank you very much for watching, see you next time, peace bye.
