Feb 27, 2020
Hello everyone and welcome to Fab Tax. I'm Rosemary and by popular request, this time I have more

organization

hacks

using

recycled

and

repurposed

items to create, which is the little help of some paint glue and items from the dollar store, as usual. I went a little. overboard and to cover them all I will be posting several videos in this series but for this one I will first be sharing storage and

organization

ideas

for craft supplies, kitchens and desks or office spaces. In future videos I will cover areas like bathroom closets. and toy organization and storage, which again will be made with

recycled

and

repurposed

items, so be sure to keep an eye out for them or better yet, subscribe and hit that notification valve to be notified as soon as they are published, ok, without more preambles.

To start, if you are short on storage or drawer space in your kitchen, you may have a drawer, which looks like this, with everything from your can opener to your keys and spatulas all stuffed into one drawer, So in this section I am going to offer a couple of

ideas

to control this disorder. I'm going to start by making a utensil caddy with this large container of disinfectant wipes. I chose this one because of its large base and I will be able to hold the tencels without them falling over. and also because of the plastic which will be waterproof and also easy to keep clean now once I remove the paper label I had this nice white jar to work with and I'm going to decorate it with scrap paper and I'm going to apply it with a bit of Mod Podge, as the scrapbook paper didn't quite fit.

I had to cut another piece of filler paper, so I'll apply that piece of filler first and then go back along the edges and make sure. that border is nice and well placed with the Mod Podge and then I proceeded to place my full sheet of paper around it and I'm going to align that pattern as well and I chose a pattern that has a nice white background or white as the predominant color so that I can capture the white of the container and they all look good together now, once the bottom layer has dried completely I will go back and apply another layer of Mod Podge on top once the Mod Podge dried the container was ready to fill with my utensils kitchen and is a beautiful decorative piece in any kitchen to give order and organization to the other items in the drawer.

I'm going to use these containers for muffins and cakes, now these are surprisingly quite sturdy, you can double them if you want something a little sturdier but all you need to do is pull them apart and they make great drawer organizers so here we have the bottoms of the cupcake containers and you can see how great they look. little organizers for measuring spoons, keys and other little items you usually have floating around in your drawers, behind them I placed the lids of the muffin containers and those also had a little divider in the middle so they looked great. organizers for things like can openers, bottle openers, and garlic presses.

Next I have the base of what was previously a Danish container and that served as a great organizer for my spoons and scrapers and since I still have a little open space behind it, I'm going to take the lid of the Danish container and then just cut off that end, then I'll slide the piece under the base and that will give me a little extender there that I could also put my measuring cups on and have a nice, neat, organized space for my knives. I'm going to make a magnetic knife holder now, although I'm a big fan of the e6000 glue.
I've been giving a lot of feedback about its toxicity, so since these knives, this knife holder will be holding while obviously coming into contact with food, I didn't want to try some of these non-toxic options, so I have the artisan selection that I bought at Hobby Lobby and this type of link I bought at Lowe's to make the knife holder. I took it into pieces of heavy cardboard that I cut from a shipping box and I cut them two and a half inches by 10 inches and then I took some of that crafter's glue and I'm going to cover the entire top of that first board. so I'm going to put a good amount of glue on and then I'm going to go ahead and make sure I have a nice even layer all over the top piece and then once I've applied all of that glue, I'm going to just add the second piece right on top for the magnets. , I'm going to use these clip magnets that I bought at Dollar Tree, they come in a package and then I took some pliers and pulled out the clip piece below.
I'll place them on the cardboard and then trace them with a pencil and once I have the pencil marks I can go back with my knife and just cut out the circles. Now I'm cutting the first top layer of the cardboard so that it still has the backing on the back. I don't want to cut directly. I'm just cutting a small slit so I can place the magnet inside and then I'll continue with Both a little bit of hot glue and some of those crafters choose glue to attach my magnets to the cardboard. Once the glue is dry, I'm going to cover the cardboard with this faux wood contact paper that I bought from Dollar Tree, but first I'm going to add. some black washi tape along the edges.
I bought this washi tape at Walmart, so I just go along the edges to get a nice clean edge. You can also do this with contact paper, it was just easier to do it with washi tape and I had it on hand so I went ahead and did it that way and then I was able to cut out a nice rectangular piece that is the exact width measurement of the support to be able to wrap it this way. Straight up and I made it a lot easier and then you can see that the contact paper doesn't affect the magnet at all and it can still hold the knife to attach it to the wall.
I'm going to use this type of command. However, if screwing to the wall is an option for you, that would always be the best option and of course you would always want to use anchors or anchor type screws or better yet into a stud, and here is the finished project hanging on the wall with the knives attached now I also wanted to mention that if you are worried about the weight of your knives because they are heavy, you can consider widening the strip and adding two magnets per knife and this way it will hold. It's nice and secure and here's another magnetic organization solution for your spices.
In this case, I'm going to take some baby food jars and paint the lids and bottoms with black chalk paint once the paint is dry. I'm going to go back with a white chalk marker and just make a little dash design around the outside and then add the name of my spice in the middle for the lid. I'm going to take some of these magnets that I bought at Walmart and I'm just going to stick some magnets in the center of the lids and it's just a matter of filling the jars and attaching them to the side of my refrigerator and this is a great option, especially if your refrigerator It is very close to your stove.
The next project is great anywhere you can use a little extra shelf space to make the shelf. I took six pieces of cardboard that I cut into 16 by 5 inch pieces, then I took some of that tack glue and added it between each of the pieces, so I made sure it was spread all over the place and then I just went back and I added the cardboard on top and then proceeded to do that for all six pieces and then once all the pieces were glued together I just went back around the edges. with a little bit of my black washi tape so I can cover the edges that way of course you could use contact paper to do that but I find it easier to use washi tape and you don't get all those gaps and sometimes it's a little bit hard to do with contact paper so I find this method easier but I'll go ahead and continue doing this.
Ultimately you could use the masking tape and just paint it black, but I had this on. hand so I went ahead and used it so once I've applied all of my washi tape I can go back with my contact paper and I can measure exactly the size I need and then just cut a strip for the top and a strip for the bottom and then as you'll see it just peels off and applies nice and easy. I don't have to worry about going around the corners or edges, it's just a nice easy application of the contact paper. and then once I apply it on top, I can easily reposition it.
You can see how it can be repositioned easily compared to if it is wrapped around the corners, edges and sides, it becomes a little tricky to reposition the sticky paper. If it's not positioned correctly, but in this case I was able to just remove it, reposition it easily and then just stick it on and go to the other side now and just do the back edge of this shelf and there you have it. It is nice and easy to attach the shelf to the wall on the back, front and side. I'm going to use two of these corner brackets.
They now come in a pack of four. Buy them at Walmart for five twenty-eight for the full package. I only need two. Of these, I'm going to go ahead and paint them black; However, if you are going to put something on the wall that has weight or will support weight, it is definitely preferable to screw it to a wall stud and if that is not the case. available you want to use an anchor kit like this one that comes with an anchor and a screw or now they have these screws that are anchor and screw combinations that my daughter told me about and I'm proud to say I'm pretty.
Impressed with them, I think they do a good job and I'm going to use them for this project, however, I don't know, I'm a little worried about using them for something so heavy, so call me nervous, old school Nellie, but I'll go with the old anchor and screw combination for a heavier project. Just a quick mention about the cordless drill and screwdriver I use. I get a lot of questions about this and I just wanted to let you know what I use. what's called the works switching screwdriver and this one is literally like the best drill ever it easily switches between a drill and a screwdriver with just a push of that little red button and it's super lightweight the battery lasts forever the bits change super easy , this is not sponsored by any I'm away from work, I get a lot of questions and I want to let you know that as you can see we've had this for quite a while and we really love this drill so if you're in the market I can't recommend it enough , OK? so let's go back to the shelf to attach the brackets to the shelf.
I'm going to measure three inches and then I'm going to take some e6000 glue and put it on the shelf in that spot and then to just attach the bracket and then I'm going to take some of these screws that come with the bracket. I'm going to add a little bit of this tight joint to the screw threads. Now you can do this with the e6000 too. I just have the Firm Joint on hand so I use that but you don't need a little glue since it's not wood and you know the screws won't stay there but if you add a little glue it will hold better. the cardboard and then I'm going to repeat the process on the other side a little bit of East 6000 then a little bit of glue on the screw threads and then go ahead and screw it into the bottom of the shelf and then let everything dry and then it's ready to hang with one of the methods we just discussed and here is the shelf again, this time being used more in a family living room or desk office space area, talking about office solutions and death, here There's a desk organization kit made out of cans, toilet paper rolls, and cereal boxes, and I know this is nothing new.
I know I for one have been doing things like this since I was in Girl Scouts and that was a long time ago, but what I'm trying to do I first want to offer something that is a more unique looking outfit. I'm going to make the pen and pencil case and start by taking this lid to a shoe box. It's a nice slim shoe box, so it works well for this. application and then to 14 ounce cans and a 24 ounce can and then to toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls and I'm going to paint the inside of the rolls and cans with black paint once the paint is dry.
To start with the toilet paper rolls and give them a good coat of Mod Podge all over and then I'll take some of this piece of paper that I bought at Hobby Lobby. It has a nice parchment background with pretty writing on the front and I thought it would be great for an office set like this, so I'm just going to take those pieces of paper and roll them around the toilet paper rolls and secure them back into the edges with a little more Mod Podge next I'm going to take my paper towel rolls and I'm going to measure them 6 inches and then just cut them there once they're cut I'm going to coat the rolls again with Mod Podge and then go ahead and apply my cut scrapbook paper pieces again applying a little more Mod Podge to the edges just to seal them once my rolls are ready.
I'm going to head over to the cans and do the same process by covering the sides of the can with Mod Podge and then Applying the cut pieces of scrapbook paperof scraps and as you can see, I cut the paper so that some black paint was still showing on the top and bottom of the cans before attaching the pieces to the base. I came back with my black washi tape and just accented the top of the roles with the washi tape and then gave everything a good coat of Mod Podge on top to attach the pieces to the base.
I used a 6 mil glue and took the two 14 ounce ones first. cans and place them on the edges of the box lid and then the largest can in the middle with the two paper towel rolls in the back and the two toilet paper rolls in the front and then I reapplied the e6000 on the bottom part and there is the finished project and I was able to place many things. There is room for two scissors, pencils, pens, Expo markers, markers, everything fits. In this cart to make the matching office supply tower, I grabbed five of these dog food cans and then also used four of these Dollar Tree marbles.
I'm going to add that at the bottom. Can I stick all four on the bottom can? to create some feet for my little tower now i used hot glue but you need to use something like an e 6000 to make them stay permanently so i took everything and gave it a nice coat of black paint and then proceeded to apply my paper strips from the scrapbook again with Mod Podge. Then I took these dollar tree stickers and I just cut them up to serve as a good sized label for my little cans and I just added the names of the different things I want in the store they're like paper clips and rubber bands and then I went back and I gave everything another coat of Mod Podge and then the cool thing is that all these little cans stack on top of each other to make a nice little tower and it takes everything off your desk and out of the way to make the matching letter holder.
I'm going to use an empty cereal box and just go back and reseal the top with some hot glue, then I'm going to take my ruler and mark on the box from the top three inches on each side. Then I'm going to turn the box on its side and from that top left corner I'm going to place my ruler in that corner and then mark up to there. three inch mark that I just marked on the front I'm going to repeat the process on the other side, I'm going to my 3 inch point on the front of the box and I'm going to walk to that corner, then I'm going to take my ruler and I'm going to cross the front of the box box from that 3 inch point to that other 3 inch point and then I just mark with my ruler right on the front of the box.
Now these will be the lines that I cut along with my utility. knife to cut the letter holder and then I also used my scissors where it seemed easier to use the ones in that back corner, it was just easier with the scissors and then I just switched back and kept going back and forth between the utility. knife and scissors, as for which was easier next, I'm going to create some stability for my mailbox by adding some feet to the bottom and I'll do it using some of these Jenga blocks from the Dollar Tree. I'm going to take two and glue them together while those pieces dry.
I'm going to take my ruler and I'm going to measure two inches from each side of the box, then I'm going to take my butt pieces and I'm going to hot glue them to the bottom of the box, about from the middle, at that mark two inches where I measured. I'm going to take those two pieces from one side and then add another two pieces to the other side and then Repeat the process on the other side of the box once everything is glued together. I'm going to paint the entire piece with black paint. Once the paint is dry, I'll go ahead and add a piece of that matching scrapbook paper to the other side of the box.
Using Mod Podge again and as you can see I'm also leaving a nice black border around the sheet of paper to give a nice accent to that black border on all sides. Now I'm just going to do the The same process on the front and again cutting that piece of paper to size so that again it leaves a nice black border around it and then cut and Mod Podge on the side pieces as well leaving room for that black border once that all the pieces are applied. I'll come back with another coat of Mod Podge all over the piece and here is the finished project, ready to hold some letters or outgoing mail or other items and one last thing before I leave the desk area.
Don't know. about you, but I have a drawer in my desk and it's extremely shallow and I've found that almost nothing works in there, but back to these little cake and cupcake stands, especially the ones that serve as mini cupcakes or some type of cupcake holders that tend to be nice and low profile and they work great in these shallow desk drawers especially if you can't find anything that you know you can buy that isn't too tall to fit in and now let's get to the crafts and this has to be the The most requested area for organization ideas first is something I have wanted to make for a long time and it is a holder for all my scrapbook paper and I am going to make this a 13 by 6 inch size. box but then with the flaps extended it becomes a 13 by 12 inch box and it is just a box that my Rubbermaid containers came shipped in.
I bought less Black Friday and I'm going to go ahead and extend the flap at the bottom, but then I'm going to stick the other two, sorry, the other three in the back so you can see what I'm doing here and what I'm going to do is use my ruler as a spacer to mark where I need to join. These wooden pegs I bought at Dollar Tree, so I'm going to place the ruler right on top of the box and that's where my first peg is going to be, so I'm going to leave enough room for the rulers. space for the first doubt to come in on that and I'm just going to use some of those tight join scripts from that and then in between those scripts, I'm going to use some hot glue and then I'm just going to put the DAO right there. at the bottom of the ruler and then once it's secure, I'll remove the ruler and use it again as a spacer to create the next location where I'm going to place my doubt and then repeat the process.
I'm going to use a little bit of that type of Bond glue and I'm going to do it like indents and I'm going to make sure it goes all the way to the edge of the dowel and then I'm going to go in between those indents with a little bit of hot glue and I do this because I have a tight joint. It will take longer to set than the hot glue and I don't want it to move on me or get hit while I move the ruler, so I want the hot glue to have that quick set, but then of course the stronger bond will be the of the tight bond glue and that will set over time and then I will continue the process across that side of the box once all the pieces are done.
I'm going to set it aside to let everything dry and in the meantime I'm going to go ahead and make my shelves and I'm going to use these pizza boxes to create my shelves and so for the box that I have I need these shelves to be a little less than 13 by 12 inches and since the scrapbook paper I'll be storing on it is 12 by 12, I used that as a guide to measure the distance from the edge of the paper to where I need it for the shelf, like this which just It was an easier way for me to measure it and I just use it as a gauge and then measure an inch and a little bit more than the size of the paper on the other side so I can get the right size. shelf size now I'm going to go back to the other side of the box and repeat the whole process to have two sides of pegs on each side of the box and if I'm going to follow the same method and just using the ruler it will line up perfectly when I go to place my shelves now that all the dowels are in I can go back and tape the flaps creating front corners for the box so I'm just using some masking tape and I'm just going to go around the four corners on the front of the box joining those flaps with adhesive tape.
I'm also going to tape the front of the box around the edges and here you can see those corners and those edges. and how they have been engraved now I am going to paint the entire box white to give my shelves some decoration. I'm going to go ahead and put some black and white polka dot washi tape along that front edge. and here on the box you can see where I put the black and white washi tape on the edges of the shelves and here I'm just putting it on this last shelf and trimming it to create a little decoration on the edge giving it a little finishing touch and here it is Scrapbook paper holder complete, paint it white with washi tape border on the edges of the shelf and fill it with a selection of different scrapbook papers.
Next I'll make the craft paint holder out of a shoe box and some cardboard roll paper for these. I'm not going to use a whole roll. I'm going to cut it to about a three inch roll so I'm going to take about an inch off the toilet paper roll because They're about four inches long and I'm doing this because I want to be able to reach the paint and if it's four inches it's going to be too difficult. I'll have to dig there to get the paint out. from the roll so I have to cut them a little bit and then I'm going to go ahead and hot glue them to the box so I put a strip of hot glue on the side of the roll and then a strip of hot glue on the bottom and then I'll continue with that all over the box so I'm going to add seven in this box because all the boxes are going to be different but in this box I'm going to have seven wide and then four high and this is what It looks like all the rolls are in the box and then I can go ahead and add my paint.
I could have painted this, but I decided to leave it natural as I thought it would look good like this next time. I'm going to make a three compartment brush jack, so I'm going to take three of my half and half quarter containers. I'm going to measure three inches from the bottom and then cut them off there, so I'll only have the three. quart container bases and then I'm going to go ahead and hot glue three pieces together. Then I'll take some Mod Podge and I'll just place that Frost on the front of my little cart and along the sides and then I'll take a strip of scrapbook paper that I'll just place on the front and then wrap that piece around to the sides , then I'm going to turn the whole cart over again, add some Mod Podge to the front and sides and take my second strip of scrapbook paper, place it back on the front and then just fold it to the sides and take a little more Mod Podge and I'll make sure I've sealed those sides where the two pieces come together and make. that back to the other side to make sure those two edges stay down and then once the first coat is dry I'll go over the entire piece with another coat of Mod Podge and then once that's dry I'll just fill it in with my brushes and I have a little brush cart there.
Another option for craft materials would be to repurpose a soda bottle box and for this one I simply painted the box white and then took some of these Ozark water bottles, removed the label and then simply cut the top off the bottle with a knife. Then I went back with my scissors and cut out any kind of irregular pieces, the bottles will hold their shape better and will also provide nice containers for the items I'm going to put in. Next, I'll add a label to the front so I can mark the supplies I'm going to put in this cart as a finishing touch.
I went back and added some washi tape to the top of the bottles. It provides a bit of decoration as well as a bit of protection from any sharp edges that may still be left on the top of the bottles and then is ready to fill with whatever materials you need to store and organize another great upcycled item to use in the craft storage and organization are these egg cartons, so these ones in particular are great because they look a little better than the cardboard ones, but the cardboard ones are great too, but these ones are good because they are transparent when you can see what there are in them and Choose the colors that you're looking for if you're organizing by color or by item type, for example, here I have some decorative pieces like little beads and glitter and you know, pearls and that kind of thing. then I also have one for the washi tape so I can see directly into the container.
I can see what it is and you can see how everything lines up and things, these little items are perfect, another one of my favorite upcycled items to use. Craft storage is definitely shoe boxes, they are great for all kinds of stickers and labels and different little toys and gadgets and different things that you can just stick them in there, put them on the shelf and store everything so well that you know where everything is. Now what I did here was just paint them because I have all these shoe boxes, they just don't look very good, but once you put an even coat of paint on them and some labels, it's amazing how everything looks so good. and organized and much better than before, when there were just a bunch of different shoe boxes and different soda cartons and different types of things like that, so once you give it that uniform color and accent a little bit, it all magically comes together andit just looks beautiful so here I just added some labels to the paint and you can see the difference it makes now here it's all together once again and you can see how that uniform color just ties everything together in Eaton's everything and just adds some of Those Black and white accents really make everything come together and look really cool.
