- $13,000 Turbo 350Z. - Compared to the $33,000 twin-turbo 350Z. - Does more expensive mean more is better? - Let's find out. - Once and for all. - Good job. - Yes. - Very synchronized. - We bought two identical Nissan 350Zs and for the last two weeks we have been modifying them to be fun, everyday ones that you can take to the track. This car has a lot of really cheap parts and in the end, it's a broken down Turbo-Z that shoots flames. In total, 13,000 dollars. -My car, on the other hand, has a lot of really nice and expensive things, totaling a staggering $33,000... for a 15-year-old car. - We test them to see which components are really worth spending money on.

In today's episode, we'll look at the cost of building these two cars, test them head-to-head on the track, and decide which one is better. - To do this, we took our cars on an 800-mile journey to the most prestigious racing circuit in North America. Sandia Speedway in beautiful Albuquerque, New Mexico. - The fastest time was... - But before we could race, we had to build our cars. And build our cars... - We did it. - Join us on this journey, won't you? - Yes. - Now we have reached the end of the road. That's why I make a lot of money. - Four million per episode, right? - For Hi-Low, I earn four million dollars per episode. - We start with suspension.

The low car received a set of coil-over shocks from eBay of unknown origin. - And the tall car received a set of KW V-3. -After discovering how much less travel the eBay coil-over shocks had compared to the KW ones, I was afraid my car's ride quality would be terrible. - I will say that these cheap threaded shock absorbers are not symmetrical. This one is longer. - This one seems shorter than this one. - It's shorter. - Surprisingly, the suspension performed well both in testing and on the road trip, but the amount of adjustment paled in comparison to that of the KW. - That's right, the V-3 absorbed every bump in the road like it was nothing.

And I don't really care about not having a low ride height because I'm an adult. - Hmm. - Next we install wheels and tires. The tall car has some Advan RG IIIs wrapped in Bridgestone RE-71. The Advans are F-light and make the tall car look sophisticated. - He really did. Meanwhile, on the low car, we bought some XXR 527s and decided to run Federal RS-RR tires. I really liked the look of my budget wheels. Even more than the expensive Advans. - You're wrong. - And we were all impressed with the performance of the Federal tires. - In fact, I preferred cheap tires. - Yes, because they had more slip and you didn't really feel bad about getting burned on the cheap tires. - Yes. - After that it was time to upgrade the brakes.

Aaron and I installed more aggressive brake pads and steel braided brake lines which gave us a stiffer brake pedal feel and more aggressive bite. - Tall car, Zach, the team and I replaced the entire brake system on the car with a 13 inch six piston brake kit. Installation definitely took longer, but we were confident we would emerge victorious in the brake torture test. - Which was immediately confirmed the next day when the low car's brakes caught fire- - It caught fire! Literally. - In my opinion, the whole brake upgrade we did on the lower car is something I would absolutely do, but don't expect to get the same level of performance as a fully dedicated Wilwood brake kit. - After the brake test, we got into our Zs.
The tall car has two Sparco QRT-R seats, a GReddy steering wheel, and a quick release hub so no one can steal it from my driveway. - The low car received some Corbeau DFX that I find more comfortable than those of your Sparco. We had to modify the seat rails to make sure we got the perfect fit, but other than that everything turned out pretty well. - Until we get to the roll cages. The roll cages didn't... - They didn't go well. - It didn't work. - Uh-uh. - Not even close? - No. - Well, that's all the way to the end of the slider. - So we spent the last six hours trying to fit our roll cages into the Z's and finally threw in the towel. - We unintentionally learned the hard way that you get what you pay for and that the universal roll bars we bought for both cars didn't fit.
That was a difficult day. - That was the only day that made the cars worse because we took off all the plastic trim and then had to put it back on, but now there are like spots where it falls off. Like the threshold of the door, every time I go out and kick it with my foot, it comes off. Stinks. Both cars were then fitted with modified differentials to make skidding possible. The tall car has a very nice Kaaz two-way differential. Zach spent a lot of time adjusting the gap, I lubed it up and it was perfect. - By low car, we take a slightly different route.
We welded ours together. Welding on a differential locks the axles, making skidding very easy. But it also makes tight turns... interesting. - Stop stop Stop. - After taking LSD, both cars were able to do skids and skids with ease. Much easier if your name is Aaron Parker or Zach Jobe. - After making a bunch of performance improvements, it was time to tweak the look of our Z. - It looks good. - It caused quite a stir on the old Internet. - Yes. I decided to Plasti Dip the low car, which was a huge disaster because I had the wrong tools and I didn't know what the hell I was doing.
That day I felt humiliated. I'm beside myself, this is the worst thing I've ever done in my life. - At the top of the team, we were fake rich kids for a day and took our car to a professional vinyl shop and couldn't have been happier with the results. It turns out that when you compare a dumb amateur guy, like Nolan, to trained professionals, the professionals do a better job. - I tried my best. - I knew you were going to do a bad job. - Well, thank you, wow. (beep) friend. - So now we had cars that looked great, drove great, and were great to sit in, so we decided to make our lives miserable and awesome, and make them better.
My car had a Jim Wolf Twin Turbo set up which made it sound like a little baby GTR. - The low car got a single Turbo kit through eBay. - We literally reached our breaking point during this Turbo installation. Nolan almost quits Donut. Fortunately for our team, Jim Wolf's kit came with an exhaustive instruction book with hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of steps. - While our cheap Turbo didn't have any instructions. - I'm not sure if that's really the case, but we can try it and see if it fits. - But we wanted it to be that way because it was at its limit.
I yelled at Eddie. Sorry Eddie. - Are you good Nolan? - No, Eddie, I'm not good. What (bleep) do you think, friend? - After most of our Turbo was installed, we set off on the 800 mile drive to New Mexico. In a wolf pack, the strongest wolf is the last to walk. Now, this program has two goals: build a fun car that you won't hate driving every day, and two, build a car that is capable on the track. - We tried objective number one in the previous episode. Both cars failed. The low car had no air conditioning, which is necessary in the Southwest, and the high car broke down repeatedly. - Repeatedly. - We're on the side of the road right now.
I'm not sure what we're going to do. - I think you should drive it to the Grand Canyon. Despite these setbacks, we finally made it to Albuquerque, tuned up the cars and got them running, almost perfectly, and it was finally time to test objective number two. - Record that sweet, sweet footage. -There are a couple of really cool, tiny little road courses in Sandia. Then we will choose one of them and run it at night. This is really the highlight of the last few weeks of frustrating work we've done. It's like, you know, it's like a competition, but let's have a good time out there. - Yes friend. - Are you guys ready? - I'm in a car without a clutch. - It's so rebellious and you're like bouncing off things. - Alright.
We're fine, we're fine. - It's just... you want to beat him up and you don't feel bad beating him up. - How does that count? - It's still... - So, to keep the results consistent and scientific, the four of us drove each car and took the average of all our times. - Wow! - 10 seconds (damped). - And there was a big difference. - Big difference between the two. - I love it. - Alright. - Has no sense. - The official results. We'll start with the car low. - Well. - The fastest time was done by Aaron and it was 46.15. - Down low? - At the bottom. - 46.15. - The best time for the car, also by Aaron, was 43.47. - Wow. - Three seconds? - Three seconds faster. - Good handling. - It was the platform.
The platform. -You have to give Nolan credit, Nolan was right behind Aaron by only two tenths of a second. - Damn. - In the tall car, Nolan had the second fastest time. - So I guess lesson learned is Zach Jobe and I need to get behind the wheel a little more, congratulations to the low team, and we'll check them out at Donut HQ when we decide which one is better. So, Nolan, more expensive means more is better? - Yes, but not really. Obviously, the tall car was faster. That said, we spent a lot of money to make a Z this good. - We're literally talking about cheap Porsche money, right now.
So which one would you buy? I know my answer. Neither. - Yes, neither. - No no no. You can not. - Yuck. - We can not? Half a car? - No, you have to buy one. - You have to buy one. - Okay, everything is fine. (bleep), I can't afford one. Yeah, I guess... No, because a low car sucks and a high car is too expensive. - Yes. - The big takeaway from the whole show is doing it in the middle. A low car sucks and a high car is too expensive. No one here could afford to build a car that tall.
