world this year, which I've broken down into styles that feature texture, color and simplicity. We'll start with the texture. The easiest way to incorporate texture into your cakes is to use a textured icing comb, and the speed and ease of this technique is one of the reasons it is gaining so much popularity. Crumb coat and frost your cake as usual, making sure the sides are straight and that you have a fairly thick layer of frosting all over the cake, as you will be removing a lot when you use the comb.

After smoothing the frosting, immediately use the texture comb, applying constant pressure against the side of the cake as you turn it on a turntable, turning it several times and touching up any gaps in the frosting with more buttercream, continuing until you have a defined texture without air pockets. These icing combs are available in many different patterns made of plastic, metal, or acrylic and they all work well, but it's easier if the comb you choose is at least as tall as your cake. You can play with the colors of your icing, like the ombre designs on these two cakes, and add drips or piping icing details or cake toppers as you would with any other design.

A more time-consuming but very forgiving way to add texture is with piping tips. Even if you haven't been decorating cakes for long, you've probably experimented with piping tips or at least the standard star tip, also called a 1M tip, which is the typical tip used to make a cupcake swirl, but you can do it. much more with this advice than just that. Place these easy roses on a cake by covering it with swirls. Try placing a large rose to cover the entire top of the cake and then pipe rows of texture around the sides of the cake to create this texture that looks a little like layered fabric, and the beauty of using piping tips for icing A cake is that you don't need to cover it with a perfectly smooth frosting, just a simple crumb coat to retain the crumbs and moisture, so if smooth frosting isn't your strongest skill, then frosting a cake with a texture of piping tip is a great alternative and I share more ideas in my tutorial on 8 Ways to Use a 1M Piping Tip and I put the link for that tutorial at the top of the screen and in the description below this video.

Other piping tip textures include this ribbon-style icing with a petal tip like number 104 or 125, these scallops that can be piped with a round tip or even a blunt piping bag and smoothed with an offset spatula or the back of a spoon. There are so many possibilities and as I mentioned, they take a little more time than using a textured icing comb, but they are completely unique and you don't need to smooth the icing, so if you haven't mastered it yet, you can still make a cake that looks decorated professionally. If you would like step-by-step instructions on how to apply all the styles on this cake, click the link at the top of the screen or the description below to see my tutorial on 6 Easy Frosting Techniques.

One of the big trends of 2019 was the faille pie, which is still going strong and definitely worth trying before the trend dies out. We've seen several variations, starting with simply spreading a second layer of frosting with a space in the middle, hence the name glitch cake. To do this, apply your first layer of frosting and let it set completely by chilling it in the refrigerator for at least an hour before applying the second layer to the top of the cake and the sides to cover only the top and bottom, leaving the middle section without a second coat so you can see that first color.
Smooth the frosting as usual, leaving a jagged edge above and below the space in the middle. If you are enjoying this tutorial, please click the Like button and subscribe to my channel to receive a new cake decorating tutorial every week. If you want to paint the edges of the glitch, chill the cake for an additional hour to set the frosting and then mix gold or silver glitter powder with vodka or any other clear alcohol or lemon extract and then paint along the edge of the glitch. failure. This is how the falla cake originated, but the trend has already evolved in several ways.
The first variation was to fill the fault line with sprinkles, which is accomplished by pressing the sprinkles into the center section of the crumb coat, letting them sit, and then piping or spreading frosting over the rest of the cake and smoothing it out to leave the space spread on half. Another fun evolution is to decorate the fault line with stripes and I will cover the stripes in more detail as a trend of its own later. Other pop-up variations include adding the second layer of frosting only to the bottom of the cake and you can spread it or use parchment paper to have more control over the placement of the frosting.
Try adding texture to the second layer of frosting with a textured frosting comb or imprint mat and take it even further by painting the second layer of frosting or adding details like the cracks in the brick wall of this Halloween cake. Liven up the edges of the fault line by adding sprinkles or edible glitter instead of the original metallic paint style. My favorite new trend is carved buttercream, which has endless texture and color possibilities in your cakes. This trend uses clay modeling tools that are very cheap and easy to find on Amazon or in craft stores and you can use the tools to carve patterns, images, shapes, textures... carving is an incredibly versatile technique and I spent it A few months experimenting with it and created an online course teaching the techniques and various styles of carved designs, including four themed cakes that showed step-by-step from start to finish how to create the design.
If you are interested in that course, just click the link at the top of the screen or the description below this video. Another trend that adds color and texture to cakes is using sprinkles to create or highlight your design. This can be as simple as pressing sprinkles into the sides of the cake, which is easier if you dip your finger in water and tap off the excess before pressing it into the sprinkles so the sprinkles stick to your finger and then when you press it. in the cake icing is transferred to the cake for perfectly precise placement.
Hide the sprinkles in the middle of your cake to get a sprinkle explosion, also called a piƱata cake, by cutting a circle in the middle of all the layers of your cake except the top, which creates a chamber that you can pour sprinkles into. inside and after. By sealing the chamber with the top layer of the cake without a hole, the cake is iced and decorated as usual and when cut, a cascade of sprinkles explodes for a fun surprise. You can buy or make your own sprinkle mix and I cover many more ways to use them on your cakes in my online course on 10 Cake Decorating Techniques and I put that link at the top of the screen and in the video description.
With all the fun sprinkle mixers you can buy that incorporate all colors and lots of metallics, I think cake color schemes will continue to be inspired by sprinkles and we'll see lots of metallics in cakes. This will include edible gold leaf which is purchased in sheets and is easily adhered to the buttercream by gently pressing it against the cake on the sheet it comes on or by using a brush to carefully lift it off the sheet and transfer it to the cake. Also popular will be edible gold paint, which is easily made by mixing gold glitter powder with vodka or any other clear alcohol or lemon extract.
For the strongest, most opaque shade of gold, use high-proof alcohol like Everclear 190, which produces a thick gold paint like this. Another way to incorporate gold is with a gold drop, which is most easily achieved by applying a drop of ganache with white chocolate or semisweet chocolate, letting it set, and then painting the drops with edible gold paint. This is much easier than it looks if the drip is the right consistency and I have a full tutorial on gold drips on my YouTube channel and the link is at the top of the screen and in the description below.
This next trend uses acetate or parchment paper to apply colorful designs to cakes. Wrap the acetate or parchment around the cake and add a few inches to leave room for the design you are going to apply, then cut the acetate and cover it with the design. Here I'm using candy melts or you can use melted chocolate colored with gel colors if you like, and then take your cold cake and wrap it tightly with acetate, pressing the design against the cake and then placing it back in the refrigerator to sit against the sides of the cake. cake.
When you remove the acetate, you will leave the design attached to the icing and this will allow you to create designs that gravity would not normally allow. You can also do this with buttercream, placing a design that you have made freehand or you can trace a pattern or design like this gift bag and after pressing it to the cake, cooling it and then peeling it off, use a softer frosting dipped in hot water to soften the design and then you can add details like buttercream borders, shading with more buttercream applied with a spatula and sprinkles to give it a little texture or to cover up any air pockets.
I put the links to my tutorials on these cakes in the description below the video. In addition to being simple, this technique is great because you don't need special tools or materials, just some acetate that you can buy on Amazon or you can make it with parchment paper. Here is another acetate cake design I made a few months ago and I started seeing more cake designs using the same technique, so I think this trend will grow this year and we will see many creative designs using this simple material. One trend that became huge in 2019 is striped buttercream created with a striped icing comb, and while they've been popular for over a year now, I don't see the trend going away anytime soon.
You can buy a striped cake comb for a few dollars and get these stunning designs that make beautiful cakes on their own or with very little additional decoration. I have a very detailed tutorial on 4 Secrets to Perfect Stripes that I recommend watching before you start and the link is at the top of the screen and in the description below this video. Let's now move on to the trends characterized by simplicity. First of all, if you haven't made one yet, jump on the number cake bandwagon! These are great because you don't need to rely on smooth frosting since you're covering the cakes with buttercream and not icing the sides.
You can show off the flavors of the cake because they are not hidden by covering the cake with icing and are easily personalized with the birthday boy or girl's favorite chocolate, candy, flowers or even toy figures. The most striking designs have a combination of colors, even if it is just the brown of the chocolates placed on top. I have a tutorial on how to make number cakes and also for this one, which has a rainbow color scheme created by rainbow-colored meringues and macaroons. Finally, another ridiculously easy cake to make is a sheet pan baked cake. These are baked in deep baking sheets or a casserole dish or disposable cake pan, and are decorated and served in the same pan, so there's no need for layering or crumb topping or anything complicated or time-consuming. time.
All you need are a few piping bags with different tips and different colors of frosting and you can cover the top of the cake with any pattern or texture you want for a fun and unique design that only takes a few minutes. I have a whole tutorial on these if you're interested in some ideas for piping styles like these rosettes and crimps and Russian tip piping flowers. These are the 10 cake trends I think we'll see in

2020
